Sustainable Healthcare Furniture

Safer Places, Safer People

As one of the UK’s leading providers of FF&E for healthcare environments, we are pleased to have achieved Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification for our infection control furniture. The certification, which is valid until 2029, has been awarded under the International EPD® System, a global programme for environmental declarations.

The rigorous EPD process involves data collection, LCA analysis, impact assessment and verification in order to develop a comprehensive document that provides transparent information about a product’s environmental impact and our mission to provide sustainable healthcare furniture.

In addition to securing EPD certification, we have also developed a new organisational carbon reduction plan which sets out a number of initiatives to further reduce the company’s carbon emissions.

In everything we do, we strive to promote good sustainability practice and reduce the environmental impacts of our all activities. Hygenius are committed to helping support our community, our clients and partners to do the same. Our product EPD supports this commitment

Sourcing the most environmentally friendly materials and working with local suppliers reduces our carbon footprint means our products give back to the community and the planet.

To architects, contractors and healthcare staff. Hygenius are here to support you on your sustainability journey.

Together, we can create a safer places for safer people.

Gerard Baxter, Sustainability Champion at Hygenius, comments:

We are thrilled to achieve EPD certification. NHS trusts are increasingly seeking suppliers who can demonstrate EPD certification for their products as this aligns with the NHS’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2040.

Our Sustainability Study

The goal of this study was to generate an environmental profile of infection control furniture to better understand the associated lifecycle environmental impacts and to allow a Type III EPD to be generated and made public via EPD International’s EPD library (environdec.com/library).

The main objectives of the study were to:

  • Better understand the environmental impacts associated with infection control furniture;
  • Identify significant contributions to the environmental impacts (“hotspots”) across the product lifecycle; and
  • Identify possible improvement areas of the studied systems that would be of interest for further analyses.

An exemplar installation of infection control furniture was assessed in this study, using a standard clean utility room design.

Our Environmental Pledge
Following the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) approach, our commitments are reductions in Scope 1, 2 & 3

Richard Thomas, Managing Director at Hygenius: “We undertook the EPD certification process and developed a carbon reduction plan because we wanted to truly understand our current organisational carbon footprint.

Now that we have a clear picture of our current position, we will be able to share our year-on-year progress against targets with our customers. Transparency in these matters is key and sharing our progress is a powerful way to hold ourselves accountable and ensure we stay on track towards our goals.
