The GOSH Clinical Research Facility has lift-off!

The new facility is part of the National Institute for Health and Care Research’s (NIHR) £161 million investment into 28 Clinical Research Facilities (CRFs) across England.

Located on the on the 8th Floor of the Southwood Building, it will provide specialist day care accommodation for children and young people taking part in clinical research studies.

Mat Shaw, Chief Executive of GOSH said: “This work, and the new Discovery Unit, is crucial to our mission to improve care for children and young people with rare or complex conditions.”

Within the CRF, it houses:

  • Inside play area
  • Parent/care lounge
  • Meeting room
  • 10 Clinical rooms
  • Baby changing and shower facilities
  • Disabled shower and baby change facilities and two individual toilets.
  • Specimen preparation laboratory

Space-Themed Interiors: Playful Art and Bespoke Furniture

Throughout the building, space-themed interiors create a bright and colourful environment. Steve McCarthy designed artwork that decorates walls and incorporates it into various features, such as in-built seating areas. This alongside high-quality bespoke furniture and fixtures provides a cheerful, playful space for patients.

Working closely with architects at Sonnemann Toon, Hygenius provided the FF&E and bespoke joinery package. The design team paid close attention to detail when selecting materials and colours to carry the space theme throughout the designs while ensuring the highest levels of infection control.

In July 2024, Tim Peake attended the opening ceremony where he met with patients, families, staff, and children from the GOSH nursery. He shared experiences about his time in space and the research he conducted on rare diseases.

 Professor Steve Marks, Director of the NIHR GOSH CRF said: It was lovely to finally unveil the new space and see the smiles on the children’s faces being amazed by the artwork, our feedback rainbow and of course a real-life astronaut!”

Hygenius was pleased to participate in creating another facility for Great Ormond Street Hospital, one of the top five children’s hospitals in the world.
