Transforming Care for Children and Young People
The South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust has recently transformed its facilities for children and young people with the development of the Pears Maudsley Centre. Notably, The NIHR awarded over £4.5 million in funding in July 2023.
Furthermore, the £65m building houses modern inpatient, outpatient and crisis mental health care facilities for children and young people, as well as clinical research facilities.
The building spans 8 floors with landscaped outdoor terraces on each, capped by a roof terrace. By harnessing natural light and extensive planting, it helps bring the outside in and allow patients to connect with nature. The Pears Maudsley Centre’s interiors incorporate dynamic colour schemes and artworks that provide a bright, positive environment.
Style That Doesn’t Compromise Safety
In high-risk mental healthcare environments, safety is unquestionably the top priority. However, balancing this with creating non-institutional interiors can be challenging.
Working closely with IBI architects (now Arcadis) and IHP (Integrated Health Projects), Hygenius were responsible for providing the fitted furniture and fixtures for the Pears Maudsley Centre.
Hygenius worked to achieve the delicate balance between safety and style without compromising on comfort or aesthetics. The furniture design includes concealed fixings and smooth, rounded edges to prevent ligature points. Also, the design team selected warm wooden tones and vibrant colours for furniture and surfaces to compliment the centre’s interiors.
Award-Winning Design & Construction
Several awards have recognised the Pears Maudsley Centre including:
- Crowned ‘Best Mental Health / Dementia Care Development’ at the Building Better Healthcare Awards
- Highly commended in the future of healthcare design category at the European Healthcare Design Awards
- Shortlisted in the Healthcare category of the NLA awards
The centre sets a new standard for children and young people’s mental health services in the UK by its holistic approach to mental well-being. Its award-winning design shows how to create a facility that not only prioritises safety but also embraces innovation, resulting in a therapeutic and inspirational place to be.
Hygenius is glad to have been a part of this pioneering project through delivering safe, stylish and functional FF&E. Our commitment to creating safer places for safer people remains at the heart of everything we do.
