A New Era for Scarborough Hospital A&E Department

The £47m Scarborough Hospital Accident & Emergency Department marks a milestone in modern healthcare for North East Yorkshire.

Built to replace the existing unit, this facility brings together emergency, same-day, and acute medical care into one integrated two-storey building.

The second floor, dedicated to critical care services, increases capacity and relieves pressure on other wards in the Trust.

With more floorspace but the same number of beds, the department is designed to streamline patient flow, reduce waiting times, and improve treatment efficiency.

Designed by IBI Group (now Arcadis) and constructed by IHP (Integrated Health Projects), the new building houses 3,120 quare metres of space on each floor. This makes the Scarborough Hospital A&E Department a third larger than the previous facilities!

An increase of 366% annual visits

The cutting-edge design of the new A&E facility prioritizes safety and efficiency.

By consolidating services, frail elderly patients and critically ill individuals receive care within a unified clinical environment, reducing transfers to other wards. This approach improves outcomes through ensuring faster, more targeted care. The new space is purpose-built to accommodate increasing demand; from just 15,000 annual visits when the previous department opened in 1985 to nearly 70,000 today.

“The patients of Scarborough and North East Yorkshire really deserve these fantastic new facilities, and we will use this opportunity to continue to develop our clinical services to ensure that our patients have access to the highest standards of care, as close to home as possible” – Dr Ed Smith, Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Deputy Medical Director at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

“An incredible new clinical space”

A key contributor to the success of the new department is internal layouts that increase staff efficiency. Hygenius provided furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E) throughout the building.

Our designs prioritize infection prevention, featuring easy-to-clean surfaces and layouts that reduce cross-contamination risks.

Hygenius furniture layouts not only reduce infection control risks but ensures that healthcare professionals are able to create efficient workflows. This combinational allows staff to deliver quality care, fast.

These solutions align perfectly with the hospital’s mission to provide exceptional care. The thoughtful integration of FF&E not only increases operational efficiency but also supports a safer environment for both patients and staff, enabling the Trust to meet its goal of delivering high-quality care.

Dr Smith summarises this when he says: “Not only will this new facility function as a hub for the 24-hour-a-day provision of urgent and emergency care services for the locality, it will also allow Scarborough-based health care professionals to provide high quality care to all our patients in state-of-the-art facilities for many years to come.”
