Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust predicted a significant increase in local demand for emergency care as a result of change in catchment area. In order to meet this need, a £40m new build was procured through the ProCure22 Framework. The new Urgent & Emergency Care Centre provides the trust with 4,864m2 of additional space and support care for up to 90,000 admissions per year.
Working alongside BDP architects, each area was designed to support clinical staff efficiency, improved patient care and a create a state-of-the-art environment for all staff and patients alike. There are various specialist facilities located throughout the centre such as an isolation room for infectious patients, bariatric provision and digital x-ray rooms.
Delivered by Tilbury Douglas, the facilities include an Urgent Treatment Centre, a Paediatric Assessment Unit, an Acute Medical Unit and a Medical Ambulatory Unit. The first patient admitted to the hospital commented:
“This new place is so bright and airy, there’s so much more space compared to the old place – everything’s so fresh looking. It’s got to be better for patients.”*
Hygenius are glad to have provided the FF&E scope of works for the Urgent & Emergency Care Centre that will create such a positive impact on patient and staff experience, giving the people of Walsall access to the high quality care they need.
